Simple beef bolognese recipe

Ever since I was a kid my grandmother has told me that all you need to make a good beef bolognese is fresh cream, ketchup, salt and pepper. This recipe is inspired by those thoughts and is incredibly simple!

  • 1 kg ground beef
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 3/4 cup sugar free ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp veal fond
  • 2 tsp basil
  • 3/4 cup full fat cream
  • Butter to fry in
  • Salt and pepper


  • Put a large skillet on a medium heat and add butter. 
  • Add the onion and ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until cooked through, about 10 minutes.
  • Add sugar free ketchup, tomato paste, veal fond, basil and full fat cream.
  • Stir with a wooden spoon. 
  • Bring to the boil and reduce to a gentle simmer. Cook for 15 minutes mins stirring occasionally, until you have a rich, thick sauce.
